Littoral Light
The constant changes of light and weather that engulf me in my shoreside studio have always been a part of my paintings, but now I am inviting nature to physically join in the dance.

The constant changes of light and weather that engulf me in my shoreside studio have always been a part of my paintings, but now I am inviting nature to physically join in the dance.
This week I dipped a clump of grass in some red ochre silt I found alongside the path and threw it on an unstretched canvas; last week I took a piece of muslin out of the composter.
In my Root Cellar Meditations series, I began by making Sumi Ink contact prints of seaweed, which was used by outport Newfoundlanders as fertilizer, and netting, which was a crop protector.
Despite their massive concrete presence, the deteriorating wartime batteries at Cape Spear are becoming archaeological relics representing the fragile and vulnerable aspect of the human condition.
A parallel between the weather and my painting process has emerged. As I scrape and scratch, glaze and layer, my paintings develop, changing in a rhythm like the weather on the beach and the ancient rocks.
